Established in 1997, Souterrain’s role is essentially to facilitate the discharge of planning conditions concerning the Historic Environment - built heritage, buried archaeology and historic landscapes.
We specialise in a wide range of Historic Environment services – Archaeological Survey, Historic Building Recording, Historic Landscape Survey, Heritage Assessment and Investigative Fieldwork (evaluation, watching briefs, excavation).
Our clients range from architects and planning consultants, to private house-builders, developers, major construction companies and other archaeological heritage organisations.
Our projects frequently involve ‘designated’ sites – Listed Buildings, Scheduled Monuments and Registered Parks and Gardens.
Souterrain is committed to professional standards and best practice for archaeology. Its directors are qualified archaeological and heritage professionals and full corporate Members of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA).
Centrally located in the east Midlands between Bedford, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Wellingborough, we operate predominantly throughout central and southern England, and occasionally Spain.

GPs Survey
Our surveying service is designed to provide solutions for archaeological contractors undertaking evaluations and excavations work. These include setting out and pre and post excavation plans.
Historic Landscape survey
We undertake analytical earthwork surveys, such as the remains of deserted medieval villages and prehistoric sites. The results may be produced graphically as contour image or 3D Digital Terrain Model (DTM).
HIstoric Building survey
We carry out Historic Building Surveys in response to development and restoration projects. The level of recording follows Historic England's Standards and Guidance.
Archaeological Investigation
We carry out all aspects of archaeological investigation, from evaluations and watching briefs to excavations, in advance of development and construction
